The truth is… after releasing Volume III, hosting parties in South Africa & France and running around all summer, we said we’ll do a break.
You know, take some time for ourselves. Slow down a little. Switch the computer off for a weekend, and even maybe book a ticket to somewhere warm — and more likely where there would be waves & not too many familiar faces around.
But this was without taking into account how quickly Volume III sold out, and how hard it was to explain everybody showing up at our office that we were “out of magazines”. Plus, talks of organizing an European movie premiere tour with Dion, Chippa, Brendon and Jay started getting real, and we thought it was too many ominous signs to not get back to work…
One issue magicked from precisely nowhere and brought to you by 20 Marlboro lights, multiple bottles of Sancerre, the Berlin underground, a maxed out FedEx account, and insomnia in Barcelona. One month in and our office literally looked like it’s been shelled. No lattes and moodboards round here, thank you very much. However, we have values (though some of which may be easily corrupted). We’re committed to bringing you the best stuff that we can. We won’t sugar-coat. We went back to South Africa, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Berlin, New Zealand, Helsinki. Old Haunts. New Faces.
Respondek shot Craig and Morgan shot Steph and when the photos arrived in the office, everyone downed tools and looked in stunned admiration. Evan Mock, one of the most genuine people we know, gave us his rolls from London and Barcelona, and here we are. Real. It’s not all pretty. And nor should it be. You already know where to go if you want it sugar-coated. We spent time with one of the most refreshing 18 year olds we’ve ever met, Karl Berglind, in Malmö this summer and life was splendid. We road-tripped from Amsterdam to Berlin and made it out the other side… Deep in the underbelly. Stale smoke, bags under the eyes. Chewed, spat out and naked apart from wearing a wry smile.
We made another magazine (get your copy here!) and if we tread on a few toes in the process, then that’s the way it is. We’re barely breaking even doing every issue, and yet couldn’t be happier. Why? Because these pieces of paper aren’t a business. They’re an encapsulation of the world as we see it and we want to share it with you. Unaltered. Raw. It’s called a sub-culture for a reason. We’re in this for ourselves. And for you.
Because you deserve better.
