Director Mohamed El Zayat‘s latest short Structures, offers a hypnotic portrait of Nasr City.

Narrated by Egyptian actor Magued El Kedwany, Structures beautifully captures the urban sprawl and brutalist architecture  of one of Cairo’s most iconic neighbourhoods, expertly lensed in stark black and white by cinematographer Mostafa El Kashef.

By using the analogy of the city as a withering flower, there’s something simultaneously poetic and haunting about El Zayat’s approach to showcasing life within the structures of the surrounding architecture. “In the sharpness of the angles. Life is found”.
